UPDATE January 30, 2018: See our short film about how Jonathan’s home has made him the champion he is today.
It might have seemed distracting, amid the Thanksgiving rush, to think about home while at work. But, here at RateGravity, we think about home all the time. That’s what makes us more than just a mortgage company, and that’s why I joined this company.
We believe that getting a fair shot at home ownership can lead to great things, which is why we’re fighting like hell to get homebuyers the best possible loans, tailored to their unique needs and their unique homes.
RateGravity exists because we believe that, with a home, ordinary people are capable of extraordinary things.
We were reminded of that mission when The Boston Globe published an article last week about a local Olympic hopeful, Jonathan Cheever. The RateGravity team was moved by this hard-working plumber of humble means who wouldn’t be deterred from pursuing his lifelong dream of snowboarding. I mean, this guy from Saugus now stands a good chance of bringing home an Olympic gold medal for the U.S. in Snowboard Cross this February.
If you don’t know what Snowboard Cross is, it’s a pedal-to-the-metal downhill race against three to five other competitors. The snowboarders blast down banked turns, jumps, and steep drops at white-knuckle speed. If you want to see it, here is Jonathan’s podium-winning run at the season’s first World Cup event this September.
These snowboarders are going over 70 miles per hour, which is why it sounds like fighter jets are taking off while they gracefully turn and jump.
RateGravity athlete, Olympic hopeful, master plumber, and Saugus native Jonathan Cheever.
RateGravity is now Jonathan Cheever’s official sponsor — and we couldn’t be prouder. We’re not just sponsoring Jonathan because he’s a gifted athlete from the neighborhood, but also because it’s clear to us that home is the center of his story.
As I was traveling to see my mother for Thanksgiving last week, this exchange between Jonathan and his mother in the Globe article pulled at my heartstrings:
‘Mom, what do you think about me moving out West?’ She said, ‘If you have a dream, chase it,’
We were so struck by how Jonathan’s parents — and his hard-working Massachusetts-born work ethic — shaped his career.
From cleaning grease traps to standing tall on World Cup podiums, it’s clear that Jonathan has never forgotten who he is and how he got here. He still keeps his plumber credits updated in the off-season. He still passionately follows the Bruins and the Sox. He even says that he’ll give his Mom his gold medal if he wins!
For us here on the RateGravity team, it’s clear that Jonathan’s home is the reason why he’s been able to recover from six orthopedic operations, a handful of concussions and a torn Achilles.
Home is the reason why he still pronounces Park City, Utah, where he currently resides, without the “r.”
Home is the reason why he podiumed in the first World Cup event this season, and why he is currently #7 in the world.
Home is why RateGravity couldn’t be prouder to be on Team Cheever.
Jonathan’s Olympic quest begins on February 14th, 2018 (yes, Valentine’s Day). It will be televised at 9:00 PM Eastern on NBC.
You can bet the whole entire RateGravity team will be cheering him on and we hope that you will be as well!
